The first sign of human being in Podgorze started 10 000 years ago in Krakus’ mound. In the Middle Ages the area on the right riverside of Vistula was economy background of Cracow. Zablocie, Plaszow, Janowa Wola were the first settlements there. In the end of XIV century they became the property of Kazimierz city.
 Podgorze city was found after the 1st partition of Poland in 1772. It belonged to Austria. It was about to be a competition for Cracow. In 1784 an emperor Josef gave to Podgorze rights of free and independent, king’s city. Lot of citizens made a living by agriculture.
 In 1809 Podgorze became a part of the Warszawski duchy, however it kept its own administration. After the Vienna Congress it was an Austrian property again. In XIX century the conqueror started to build a system of fortifications around Cracow and Podgorze. You can still see them on the Lassota hill and visit the Benedict’s fort.
 This period of Polish history brought the industry to Podgorze. It has happened also due to the deposit of mineral resources there. The Cement Liban, brickyards, quarries were found then. In 1915 Podgorze became a part of Cracow.
During the World War II Podgorze was the district of the Jewish ghetto and a concentration camp. More than 80 000 people were killed here. After the war, Podgorze was on the decline. From 70s housing developments of blocks of flats like Kurdwanow, Biezanow were build here. In 1968 Cracow’s Television started on Krzemionki. |
