The Plaszow's Concentration Camp |
|
During the Word War II, Nazis created a concentration camp in Plaszow. It was found in 1942 on the place of two Jewish cemeteries. Cemeteries were completely devastated and headstones were used to harden the roads. Prisoners worked in quarries owned by Liban & Ehrenpreis" company, in Oscar Schindler’s fabric, cables’ fabric, brickyard and Rakowice airport.
Firstly, there were 2 000 prisoners here, later – 10 000. Throw Plaszow went 150 000 people, mostly Jewish from ghettos in Tarnow, Mielec, Slovakia, Hungary. Here transports to Auschwitz started. In January 6th, 1945 there was the last transport of Plaszow’s prisoners to Auschwitz-Birkenau II.
Amon Goethe, the commanding officer of Plaszow camp, was arrested in September 13th, 1944 by Germans. He was accused on corruption not on murders. After the War, he was recognized as war criminal and transferred to Poland. Here, he was accused on genocide and crimes against the humanity. He was sentenced to death by hang. It was carried out September 13th 1946.
Nowadays the area of Plaszow’s camp is run-down. There are only two monuments (one big and one small) for memory the victims of fascism. The area of Liban quarry was used by Spilberg in the movie “The Schindler’s List”. You can still see the remains from movie plan there. |
