The Jagiellonian University
ImageThe Jagiellonian University is the oldest Polish university. It was found in 1364 by the king – Kazimierz Wielki. In 1400 the king Wladyslaw Jagiello (using the treasure of the queen Jadwiga’s last will) re-established University and opened the 4th faculty of theology.
ImageXV century is the golden age of the University. One of the most famous students was Mikolaj Kopernik (an astronomer), saint Jan Kanty, the Polish king Jan III Sobieski or Karol Wojtyla – the pope John Paul II.

Nowadays the Jagielonian University is one of the most prestigious university in Poland. Lot of international meetings and conferences take place here, specially after opening of Auditorium Maximum – the most modern lecture hall.

ImageImageThe Museum of the Jagiellonian University is situated in Collegium Maius – the oldest building of University, from 1400. It’s worth to go there at 1.00 and 5.00 p.m. to admire the clock on the courtyard.
The Museum hides lot of souvenirs which belonged to for e.g. Mikolaj Kopernik, the queen Jadwiga, etc.
From this place every year at 1st of October, the parade of the Jagiellonian University’s professors starts.
Collegium Novum is the current base of the University authorities. It was build in XIX century. On the second floor there is the room number 56 which reminds of a tragic history of the World War II. In November 1939 Nazis lured there 183 professors and other research workers and took them to concentration camps.
