The Barbakan and the Florianska Gate |
|
The Barbakan is called also a saucepan. It is a part of Cracow\\\'s fortifications, build in 1498/9 year. Its inside is 24,40 meters in diameter and the thickness - more then 3 meters. It is a Gothic building with 7 towers. It used to be joined with the Florianska Gate by so-called neck. The main task was to protect the city.
Unfortunaletly you can`t visit the Barbakan even though it has been renovated lately. The Florianska Gate in Cracow was build in XIV century and it`s 34,5meters high. Under the gate there used to be an eagle replaced by Piast`s eagle designed by Jan Matejko in 1882. Inside there is an classic alter from XIX century with a picture of Saint Maria. On the Florianska Gate walls, no matter of the season of the year, there is one of the biggest and the most untypical paintings gallery in our city. Lot of present artists are shown their works there. The Florianska Gate and the Barbakan are parts of battlements which were surrounding the city. They were 2,40 width and 6-7 meters high. Today we can see 3 gothic towers and city arsenal from XVI century. Battlements are currently replaced by Planty - the green Cracow`s salon.
