From the dawn of history Cracow has been a place where people live. In 1039 Piast prince Kazimierz Odnowicel found his headquarter on Wawel hill and since that time Cracow had been the capital of Poland. In the beginning of XI century the bishopric was created here and as a consequence lot of churches and trade markets.
In 1257 prince Boleslaw Wstydliwy gave a right of location to the Cracow. The Main Market borders were fixed in the center of the city. Dimensions of it are: 200 m x 200 m.
The Main Market was a witness of lot of manifestations, the Prussian homage in 1525, the Kosciuszko’s oath in 1794 and also regular trade. In lot of coffees there was an artistic and political life and … a debauchery.

According to medieval architectural plan streets were situated on a chessboard system. However some of the buildings like St. Wojciech church, St. Mary`s Church destroy the architectural order.
Nowadays the Main Market, despite of the Cloth Hall and the Town Hall, St. Wojciech church and the monument of Adam Mickiewicz, is an empty place. In the middle age on the flags of the Main Market there were the Town Hall, a granary, the Big Scale, the Small Scale and lots of stalls. The ruins of the last position you can see now in archeological pits.

Around the Main Market there are tenements which are the monuments of art and history. The famous are : Under the Rams Palace and Krzysztofory Palace.

The Main Market had have better and worse days. Today it’s still a place which is worth to visit just only to drink a beer in some of pubs situated around it, to listen flower girls or to go for a ride in a magic hackney carriage.
