The Royal Castle in Niepołomice |

In the 14th century around 25 kilometres (around 15 miles) from Krakow was the small village of Niepołomice. It was surrounded by a vast forest full of wild animals. Impressed by the landscape, Kazimierz the Great decided to build a gothic castle here. During the reign of Władysław Jagiełło the castle became the second official seat of the monarch, after the Wawel Castle. The castle underwent general modifications by Zygmunt Stary and his sons. |

Pieskowa Skała is a Renaissance castle in Poland north of Krakow in the Polish Jura. 30 km from Cracow and 70 km from the Upper Silesian Conurbation near the minor road No. 773, 10 km from the main road No. 4; on the hill rising above the picturesque valley of the River Prądnik and surrounded by the forests of the Ojców National Park, 8 km from the attractive village of Ojców (the villas and buildings of the old resort, ruins of a castle, Łokietek Cave and the Dark Cave); on the Route of Eagles' Nests connecting ruins of 7 castles situated on the hills of the Cracow and Częstochowa Upland. |

The slogan ARBEIT MACHT FREI over the gate translates as "Work (shall) make (you) free" (or "work liberates"). Auschwitz is the name used to identify three main Nazi German concentration camps and 45-50 sub-camps. It’s situated about 60 km southwest of Cracow. Beginning in 1940, Nazi Germany built several concentration camps and an extremination camps in the area, which at the time had been annexed by Nazi Germany. The camps were a major constituent of the Holocaust.
